Yaiza mayor seeks border-control details for Playa Blanca cruise calls

Óscar Noda has asked Puertos Canarios about preparations for international ships and the status of a November visit.

Yaiza mayor Óscar Noda has formally requested information from Puertos Canarios on measures intended to provide the border controls required for international cruise ships calling at Playa Blanca port.

Noda also sought an update on a cruise ship visit scheduled for November. If the call cannot proceed, he asked the port authority to specify which issues could prevent the vessel from docking.

According to Noda, towing, mooring, pilotage, security and immigration controls are all necessary for cruise operations. He expressed concern about what he described as a prolonged lack of information after raising questions about those services at an Advisory Council meeting last December.

His request also asks whether Puertos Canarios is aware of shipping companies being told that some cruise ships may operate only at the port of Arrecife.

In addition, Noda requested details about obligations attached to European funding used for the expansion of Playa Blanca port. He asked whether the infrastructure’s current conditions of use could create a risk that the funding would need to be repaid.
