Which Cruise Lines Offer Standby Cruises? Princess Joins Holland America

Princess Cruises has launched a true prepaid standby program, joining Holland America in offering reduced fares to flexible travelers willing to wait until the final days for confirmation.

Princess Cruises has introduced a true standby program for select sailings, putting it alongside Holland America Line as one of the few major cruise brands that lets travelers pay a reduced fare, wait for space, and receive final confirmation shortly before departure. This is different from an ordinary last-minute sale: joining a standby list does not guarantee that the cruise will clear.

Princess lists eligible cruises from Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, and Seattle. Starting fares from the three Florida and California ports are $79 per person per day for an Inside or Oceanview stateroom and $99 for a Balcony. Seattle starts at $119 and $199 respectively. The advertised standby prices include taxes and fees, although Princess says final pricing can vary.

Travelers call Princess to join and pay the full standby fare at enrollment. Princess begins reviewing lists about seven days before sailing and may confirm guests until 48 hours before departure or later at its discretion. A confirmed booking becomes nonrefundable. If Princess has not confirmed the booking by 48 hours before departure, it cancels the standby reservation and issues a full refund.

Cabin choice is limited. Guests select a broad category rather than a specific room or location, solo travelers may pay a 200% supplement, and Princess Vacation Protection is not available for standby bookings. Princess explicitly describes the program as intended for guests who live within driving distance of the departure port.

Holland America already offers a close equivalent

Holland America Line operates the closest comparison. Its standby fares generally start at $99 per person per day for an Inside or Oceanview stateroom and $129 for a Verandah, with some Caribbean and Mexico sailings advertised from $79 and $99. Holland America also charges guests when they join, reviews the list seven to two days before departure, and refunds travelers who are not selected.

Holland America says it clears guests in the order they joined the list. If a Verandah is unavailable, a guest may be offered an Inside or Oceanview room at the lower rate and can decline that downgrade for a refund. Its current program spans a wider group of homeports, including Seattle, Vancouver, Whittier, San Diego, Boston, Montreal, New York, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, depending on the eligible sailing list.

Other restricted fares are not standby

Several cruise lines sell deeply discounted guarantee fares that can look similar but work differently. Disney's IGT, OGT, and VGT offers, Norwegian's Sail Away categories, and Virgin Voyages' Lock It In rates may leave the exact cabin assignment until close to departure. The important difference is that the cruise booking itself is confirmed. Celebrity's Exciting Deals and MSC's last-minute offers are also confirmed inventory rather than a waitlist.

For now, Princess and Holland America are the two major lines with clearly documented consumer standby programs that share the pay-now, wait-for-space model. Travelers should verify that a specific list is still accepting guests and reread the current terms before paying, because eligible sailings, prices, and program rules can change without notice.

Who standby cruises suit best

Standby works best for flexible travelers who can drive to the port, keep travel documents ready, and accept that the trip may not happen. It is a poor fit when flights, hotels, time off, or nonrefundable plans depend on the cruise being confirmed. The fare can be exceptional, but the uncertainty is part of the product.
