Travis Stedman traces his path into the cruise sector
The Cruise Cape Town professional brought a background in investment and strategy to his first industry role.

Travis Stedman said his earliest memorable cruise ship encounter came during childhood, when he saw Queen Mary in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Despite that early impression, he said he has never taken a cruise as a passenger.
Cruise Cape Town marked Stedman’s first professional position in the cruise industry. He entered the sector with experience in venture capital, business development and strategy, applying that background to an industry spanning tourism, trade, investment and destination development.
His first time sailing was a Ponant scouting voyage in November 2024. The itinerary traveled from Cape Town to Mossel Bay and included an overnight stay in Hermanus. According to Stedman, the ship operated without guests, giving him the opportunity to dine with the captain each evening and hear about the captain’s experiences.
Stedman said he does not have a formal mentor within the cruise industry, but described Alex Zietz, Virgin Voyages’ senior director of global operations, experience and belonging, as an important source of inspiration. He also attended his first Seatrade Cruise Global event in Miami in 2024.
