Travelers Share First Impressions of Holland America’s Zaandam
A seven-day Baja Peninsula cruise began with dolphin sightings and an unintended detour into a crew-only area.

Travelers sailing aboard Holland America’s Zaandam said they embarked in San Diego for a seven-day voyage to the Baja Peninsula. They had flown from Edmonton to San Diego one day before boarding the ship.
According to their account, the trip marked their first sailing on Zaandam. They described the vessel as feeling smaller than Holland America’s Noordam and Koningsdam, while indicating that they viewed the more compact size positively.
The travelers also reported seeing numerous dolphins as Zaandam sailed away from San Diego. They said further dolphin sightings were visible later through the window of their ocean-view accommodation.
During their exploration of the ship, the travelers said they came across what they initially believed was a concealed staircase. Their account said they briefly entered an area reserved for crew members before recognizing the mistake.
