Travel Advisor Shares Tips for Planning a Cruise
Anna Gilbert of luxury travel agency upannaway recommends seeking added booking benefits, exploring ports independently and considering expedition itineraries.

Travelers planning a cruise may benefit from booking through a travel advisor instead of reserving directly, according to upannaway founder Anna Gilbert. She says advisors can sometimes provide onboard credits, specialty dining, spa treatments or other amenities that may not be available with a direct booking.
Gilbert also encourages travelers to look beyond conventional sailings in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. She points to expedition cruises in the Arctic, Antarctica and the Galápagos as options for those interested in distinctive destinations.
Once in port, Gilbert recommends leaving the ship to experience local food, culture, nature or adventure. She says passengers do not need to depend exclusively on cruise-line excursions and may be able to arrange private, tailored outings through trusted local partners.
On board, Gilbert suggests trying at least one specialty or premium dining venue, describing the additional cost as generally worthwhile. She also highlights cruising’s social dimension, saying she has seen passengers meet during a voyage and later plan additional trips together.
