St. Thomas taxi wait changes traveler’s approach to visiting St. John
The traveler said he now uses a Royal Caribbean excursion that arranges ferry and taxi transportation.

A traveler reported abandoning an independent plan to visit St. John after a long wait for a taxi in St. Thomas. He said the delay grew from half an hour to an hour as his plans became unworkable.
According to the traveler’s report, St. Thomas primarily uses safari taxis, which are converted pickup trucks with benches installed in the rear bed. His independent itinerary called for reaching Red Hook, described in the report as the closest ferry point between St. Thomas and St. John. Ferries from Red Hook operate hourly, the report said.
The traveler said he now books Royal Caribbean excursions to St. John because the cruise line arranges transportation. He reported that the company’s St. John on your own excursion includes a ferry ride and taxi transportation to and from Trunk Bay.
However, the traveler said that on one occasion, Royal Caribbean’s choice of hours in St. Thomas left him with about 90 minutes of beach time during the excursion.
