Sitka considers permit process for cruise ship docks
A draft zoning ordinance would add public review for new or expanded cruise facilities while grandfathering existing docks.

Sitka is considering changes to its zoning rules that would establish a permitting process for new or expanded cruise ship docks. Existing docks would be allowed to continue under the draft ordinance.
The city’s current zoning code does not distinguish commercial docks by their size or use, treating cruise ship facilities the same as docks serving charter fishing boats. Commercial docks are allowed by right in commercial, waterfront and industrial zones.
Planning and Community Development Director Amy Ainslie told a September 29 meeting that the existing rules could allow cruise ship docks to be developed with minimal or no public process.
The proposal was scheduled for an October joint work session involving the planning and tourism commissions, along with a legal review. After incorporating commission feedback, officials planned to publish a revised draft on the city’s website for a 30-day public comment period.
The ordinance would then require approval from both commissions before advancing to the assembly for consideration. Ainslie indicated that reaching the assembly stage remained many months away.
