Search launched for missing Ambition cruise guest off Scotland

HM Coastguard deployed aircraft, rescue teams and lifeboats after a man was reported overboard east of Arbroath.

A search-and-rescue operation was launched after a man was reported overboard from the cruise ship Ambition at about 8.35am on Friday, according to HM Coastguard. The ship was approximately 36 nautical miles east of Arbroath, Angus.

The search involved a coastguard helicopter and aeroplane, RNLI lifeboats from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry, and coastguard rescue teams based in Dundee, Arbroath and St Andrews. A commercial search-and-rescue helicopter and several vessels in the area also assisted.

Ambassador Cruise Line said Ambition was sailing from Lerwick to Dundee when a guest could not be located. The vessel later docked in Dundee, where passengers were permitted to leave after a search was conducted throughout the ship.

The cruise line said the incident caused a slight delay to Ambition’s turnaround in Dundee. Passengers scheduled to join the ship were advised to arrive at the port in accordance with their existing embarkation times.

Police Scotland said HM Coastguard was conducting the search-and-rescue operation and that the man remained missing. The force also said his next of kin had been informed.
