Royal Caribbean Passenger Questions Prepaid Gratuities After Online Claim

The cruise line says collected gratuities support compensation for a range of onboard employees.

A Royal Caribbean passenger identified as Juelz said she declined the cruise line’s prepaid gratuities after watching another content creator allege that the money did not reach staff members.

Juelz said Royal Caribbean later contacted her by phone to discuss prepaid gratuities. No details were provided about the call’s outcome or whether she changed her decision.

According to Royal Caribbean, gratuities it collects are combined and applied toward compensation for multiple groups of crew members. The company says those workers include dining, bar and culinary employees, stateroom attendants, hotel services teams and others who contribute to the onboard experience.

The reported daily service charge for guests who do not prepay gratuities ranges from $18.50 to $21. Royal Caribbean also states that guests may not make changes to gratuities after their sailing has concluded.
