Royal Caribbean passenger questions $167 refund after canceling cruise
The cruise line offered to review the booking and explain which cancellation terms applied.

A Royal Caribbean passenger identified as Josh said he received a $167 refund after canceling a cruise for which he had paid $1,600 in full. Josh said he canceled the trip in September because he could no longer travel, but he did not publicly disclose the reason.
Royal Caribbean responded by offering to examine his booking details, explain how the refund was calculated and clarify the cancellation conditions that applied to the reservation. Neither Josh nor the company publicly provided further information about the dispute.
The cruise line’s cancellation charges depend on the length of the sailing and the amount of time between cancellation and departure. Royal Caribbean also says its travel-protection plan reimburses 100% of unused prepaid trip costs when travelers cancel for reasons specified by the plan. For cancellations made for other reasons, the company says the plan provides 90% of the cost in future cruise credits.
Travel insurance company Squaremouth estimates that Royal Caribbean’s coverage generally costs between 8% and 10% of the total cruise fare. It was not publicly established whether Josh had purchased the protection plan or which cancellation provisions governed his booking.
