Royal Caribbean Continues Seeking Approval for Perfect Day Mexico
The cruise company’s proposed Costa Maya destination faces a revised timeline as government and community discussions continue.
Royal Caribbean Group is continuing efforts to regain approval for its planned Perfect Day Mexico destination at the port of Costa Maya, three months after the project encountered a setback.
The Mexican government blocked the development from proceeding in May after opposition that included millions of digital petitions, primarily centered on environmental concerns.
Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty said discussions remain underway among the company, government officials and members of the community. He said the government’s engagement with local stakeholders would require time and was expected to alter Royal Caribbean’s previously planned schedule.
Plans for Perfect Day Mexico include a waterpark and nearly two miles of beaches. The destination was designed to resemble the company’s Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.
Royal Caribbean is also highlighting its investment in a new community center in Mahahual. The facility is intended to accommodate workshops, sports and other community events.
