Royal Caribbean completes first phase of Mahahual sargassum program
The five-month pilot removed 977 metric tons of seaweed before it reached the Mexican destination’s coastline.

Royal Caribbean Group has completed the first phase of a sargassum management initiative in Mahahual, Mexico, where it is developing the Perfect Day Mexico destination for a planned 2027 opening.
Created with local nonprofit Menos Plástico es Fantástico, the pilot focused on intercepting sargassum in the reef lagoon before it reached shore. During the five-month phase, crews collected 977 metric tons of seaweed using 3,054 nets and produced 560 sacks of dried material.
A second phase is scheduled to run through November. Royal Caribbean and the nonprofit plan to increase the in-water collection fleet from two boats to three and expand operations along the navigation channel connecting central Mahahual with the entrance to Quebrado Norte.
Separately, Royal Caribbean has supported the relocation and expansion of Mahahual’s sargassum barrier system. That work, coordinated with the Mahahual Sargassum Committee and Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy, included additional anchors and technical equipment.
