Riviera Travel pauses Rhine and Danube cruise sales amid low water

The suspension runs through mid-September across all markets, while most scheduled sailings are expected to continue with itinerary changes.

Riviera Travel has paused sales of its Rhine and Danube river cruises through mid-September because of persistent low water levels. The company confirmed that the suspension applies in every market, including North America.

Most upcoming departures are expected to operate with revised itineraries. Riviera Travel said it would not replace substantial sections of planned river travel with repeated long-distance coach journeys simply to preserve an itinerary. Eight sailings were operating with modifications.

The August 26 and September 2 departures of Medieval Germany, Bavaria, and the Romantic Road aboard MS George Eliot were forecast to operate normally, with some improvement in river conditions expected within 72 hours.

Riviera Travel said it was watching the Rhine Gorge most closely, though recent changes in river levels had made conditions there more positive. On the Danube, no rain was expected over the following few days. The company was instead monitoring how water already in the river system moved downstream through Austria toward Bratislava, Komárom and Budapest.
