Reports Detail Items Confiscated During Cruise Security Screening

Passenger accounts describe steamers, extension cords, hair dryers and pocket tools among belongings taken during screening.

Clothes steamers are considered fire hazards aboard cruise ships and are consistently flagged during security screening, according to the report. Passengers have also reported having extension cords confiscated even when they believed the cords met stated guidelines, including having no surge protector and fewer than four plugs.

Passengers who reached collection tables after cruises have repeatedly reported seeing hair dryers among the confiscated belongings. Pocket knives and multi-tools are also commonly taken, according to the report, sometimes after passengers forgot the items on keychains or inside toiletry bags. One passenger said a full-size machete appeared on a confiscation table among pocket knives and hair dryers.

The report states that Carnival allows each adult to carry on a bottle of wine or champagne during boarding. Carnival prohibits beverages in plastic or glass bottles, regardless of their contents, while permitting passengers to bring canned beverages within the cruise line’s stated limit. One passenger reported that Coke Zero was removed from checked luggage and said they did not attempt to retrieve it.
