Pair skater outlines demands of working aboard cruise ships
Shipboard skating contracts combine regular performances on a moving vessel with extensive preparation, physical conditioning and months away from home.

A professional pair figure skater says she has spent several years performing aboard cruise ships sailing in the Caribbean and other destinations. Her work includes rehearsing and presenting shows while the vessel is underway.
The skater said performers must remain physically prepared to complete lifts, throws and other complex pair-skating elements several times each week. They also live and work alongside thousands of passengers and crew members from around the world during their assignments.
Before joining a vessel, performers must complete a range of administrative and travel requirements, according to her account. These preparations can include medical examinations, visa applications, contracts, travel bookings, insurance paperwork and vaccinations when required, as well as months of personal planning.
She described cruise ship contracts as lasting six or seven months. Performers must therefore pack everything needed for that period into a limited number of suitcases before departure.
