NSW advisory panel considers options for cruise capacity

The government-established group will identify a preferred location for a potential terminal and examine capacity at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

The NSW Government has established a Cruising Industry Advisory Panel to identify a preferred location for a potential new cruise terminal in the state. It will also examine whether capacity at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal could be increased.

Port Authority chief Phil Holliday chairs the panel. Members include senior figures from Royal Caribbean, Carnival Australia, Norwegian Cruise Line, Ponant, Cruise Lines International Association, the Australian Cruise Association, NSW Ports and the tourism sector.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay provides one berth for large ships east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. White Bay offers additional capacity west of the bridge, which makes it inaccessible to many of the increasingly large ships being built by major cruise lines.

Vancouver provides a capacity comparison, with facilities able to berth three ships and handle 10,120 passengers.
