Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings signs Malta shore-power agreement
The deal will allow the company’s passenger ships to connect to Malta’s electricity grid while docked.

Transport Malta and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have entered a Shore Power Purchase Agreement enabling the company’s passenger ships to draw electricity from Malta’s grid while in port.
Under Malta’s Shore-to-Ship project, shoreside electricity can support onboard services including lighting and air conditioning. The connection reduces the need for ships to operate their engines while docked, lowering pollution generated in port.
Transport Malta said the deal was its fourth agreement for shore-power supply. Chief Executive Officer Leonid McKay signed on behalf of the authority, while Director of Nautical Operations Cristian Cutugno represented Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.
The signing took place during the Decarbonising The Future conference in Malta, held from October 12 to 14, 2026. Sustainable Mobility Minister Chris Bonett and Ports and Yachting Directorate Chief Officer and Harbour Master Captain Fritz Farrugia were present.
