MSC Cruises expands marine mammal safety work with Orca

The partnership combines crew training, onboard observation and research intended to reduce collisions with whales, dolphins and porpoises.

MSC Cruises is continuing its collaboration with U.K.-based marine conservation organization Orca, which began in March 2023 with training for deck officers on avoiding collisions with marine mammals. MSC reported that 469 crew members across its fleet had completed the training by the end of 2024.

As part of the initiative, Orca marine mammal observer Maria Snell completed a five-week residency aboard MSC Poesia focused on research and traveler awareness. From the ship’s bridge, Snell used Orca camera equipment to document marine mammal sightings and movement.

The research is intended to improve understanding of interactions between ships and marine mammals, helping crews navigate in ways that may reduce strikes. Snell also notified bridge personnel when whales were observed in the vessel’s path and supported precautions that included voluntary speed restrictions.

MSC Cruises has committed to return to Alaska in 2027 and 2028. Its sister brand, Explora Journeys, is also working with Orca on crew training and plans to begin its first Alaska season in 2027 aboard the 922-passenger Explora III.
