Marella Discovery 2 Positions Off Spain for Total Solar Eclipse

Nearly 1,800 passengers gathered on deck as the TUI ship adjusted its Mediterranean itinerary to reach the path of totality.

Marella Discovery 2 sailed into position off Spain to give passengers a view of a total solar eclipse during the second day of its Cosmopolitan Charms itinerary. According to an account from aboard, the sun was fully obscured for 93 seconds, leaving those on deck in darkness in the Mediterranean.

The voyage began in Palma de Mallorca, with its schedule adjusted to reach a suitable viewing point at sea. After departing the Spanish port of Palamós, the ship sailed for several hours before almost 1,800 passengers assembled on the top deck for the event.

The TUI vessel can accommodate 1,836 passengers and features two swimming pools, a spa, mini-golf course, climbing wall and outdoor cinema. The wider cruise called at Propriano in Corsica, Civitavecchia for Rome, the Amalfi Coast and Palermo.

Marella Discovery 2 is due to become permanently adults-only next winter, according to the report. Its children’s areas are planned to be replaced with a speakeasy-style bar, an escape room, a karaoke room and an arts-and-crafts space.
