H2MASS project targets 4 MW hydrogen system for cruise ships
The research partnership will develop and test metal hydride storage designed to supply large passenger vessels with energy during port stays.

MEYER WERFT joined Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg and Carnival Maritime GmbH to launch the H2MASS hydrogen research project on May 1. H2MASS stands for Hydrogen for Cruise Shipping.
The project focuses on developing a metal hydride hydrogen storage system intended to provide energy for large passenger ships while they are in port. The consortium plans to integrate the storage technology into a 4 MW hydrogen energy system designed to satisfy maritime technical, safety and regulatory requirements.
As part of the initiative, the partners will construct a demonstrator and test it under realistic operating conditions. They will also create a digital twin to simulate and optimize the system and assess how the technology could be scaled for future ship applications.
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is funding H2MASS, while Projektträger Jülich is coordinating the project.
