Greenland advises cruise ships to avoid some fjord areas

The government says the recommendation aims to protect vulnerable environments and support local recreational, hunting and fishing activities.

The Government of Greenland is advising cruise ships not to sail in some fjord areas. The recommendation was reported as following inquiries from residents.

Naalakkersuisut, Greenland’s government, said the measure is intended to reduce effects on vulnerable natural areas and wildlife. It also aims to address local requests to maintain the areas’ recreational value and preserve opportunities for hunting and fishing.

The advice comes as more than 20 cruise calls were scheduled for Qaqortoq and Nanortalik in the coming weeks. Cruise brands visiting the two destinations during the season covered by the report included Carnival, Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn, Phoenix Reisen, AIDA, Viking, Windstar, Explora, Holland America, Celebrity and Virgin.
