Greenland Advises Cruise Ships to Avoid Some Fjord Areas
The recommendation seeks to protect vulnerable environments while preserving local recreation, hunting and fishing opportunities.
Naalakkersuisut, Greenland’s cabinet and chief executive body, has issued a recommendation advising cruise ships to avoid sailing in some fjord areas. The guidance was announced in a government press release.
The recommendation followed inquiries from local residents, according to reports. Residents have expressed concerns that cruise ships place pressure on natural areas, disturb wildlife and create noise pollution.
Naalakkersuisut said the measure is intended to reduce impacts on vulnerable natural areas and wildlife. It also aims to address residents’ wishes to retain the areas’ recreational value and maintain opportunities for hunting and fishing.
The government said increasing cruise interest in Greenland benefits the development of the tourism industry. However, it added that tourism growth must be sustainable and show respect for local communities, nature and wildlife.
Qaqortoq and Nanortalik are among Greenland’s most popular destinations. More than 20 cruise calls were scheduled for the two locations in the coming weeks.
