Greece readies EUR 20 cruise fee for Santorini and Mykonos
The planned charge and limits on ship visits form part of a government strategy to address over-tourism and protect the islands.

Greece is preparing to introduce a EUR 20 fee for tourists arriving by cruise ship at Santorini and Mykonos, two of the country’s popular islands.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the charge is a response to a significant surge in visitor numbers that has strained local infrastructure and the environment.
As part of its wider strategy to address over-tourism and protect the islands, the Greek government will also regulate the number of cruise ships allowed to visit Santorini and Mykonos. Revenue collected from the cruise ship tax will be reinvested in local communities to improve infrastructure.
Cruise arrivals increased at both destinations in 2023. Santorini received 1.3m passengers from 800 ships, while Mykonos experienced a 23pc increase in cruise ship visits.
