Former Royal Caribbean ships followed varied paths after leaving fleet

Several longtime vessels were transferred, resold or dismantled after completing their service with the cruise line.

Royal Caribbean sold Majesty of the Seas and Empress of the Seas in 2020, ending more than two decades of service with the company for each vessel.

Earlier members of the fleet changed operators before later leaving service. Song of Norway was sold to Sun Cruises in 1996 after 26 years with Royal Caribbean and continued sailing as Sundream until 2004. Song of America was also sold to Sun Cruises, in 1998, but was chartered back to Royal Caribbean through 1999.

Sovereign of the Seas, whose maiden voyage took place in April 1988, was transferred in 2008 to Pullmantur Cruises, then a Royal Caribbean subsidiary. Sovereign and Monarch of the Seas were sold for scrap in 2020, with Monarch dismantled in Turkey.

Other former Royal Caribbean vessels were broken up in South Asia. Nordic Prince was dismantled at Alang, India, in 2015, followed by Viking Serenade at the same location in 2018. Sun Viking was scrapped at the Gadani Ship Breaking Yard in Pakistan in 2022.
