Fire marshal declares Whittier cruise dock a total loss
The approximately $80 million dock was heavily damaged in a fire, while no injuries were reported and Norwegian Jade departed safely.

A severe fire erupted at about 11 a.m. on Sept. 14, 2026, at the north pier of a cruise terminal in Whittier, Alaska. The state fire marshal’s office declared the approximately $80 million dock a total loss.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the blaze at the north pier of the Chugach Glacier Gateway Cruise Terminal damaged one tour boat. No injuries were reported. Multiple fire departments worked into Tuesday before extinguishing the fire.
The Anchorage Fire Department said crews had no working hydrant near the dock, complicating the response. Firefighters used an engine and water tenders to transport 112,000 gallons of water.
The terminal was developed through a partnership involving Huna Totem Corp., the City of Whittier and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. It opened in 2024. Norwegian Jade reportedly left Whittier without incident and sustained no damage.
