Family-focused cruise ships pair water parks with themed dining
A selection of 10 currently sailing vessels highlights ships purpose-built or extensively refitted for family travel.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, which entered service in 2024, features six waterslides in its Thrill Island area. The ship’s Category 6 attraction was described in the report as the largest water park at sea when Icon debuted. Wonder of the Seas offers a zip line, climbing wall and FlowRider surf simulator, with beginner and open surfing sessions available.
Disney Wish has centered its family program on character encounters and story-led dining since entering service in 2022, rather than emphasizing thrill attractions. Disney Treasure, the second vessel built on the same hull design as Wish, began service in December 2024.
Other family amenities span a range of activities. MSC Seaside has an aqua park with two large waterslides and a separate toddler-sized splash area. Carnival Mardi Gras, in service since 2021, carries BOLT, described by the report as the first roller coaster installed on a cruise ship. Norwegian Encore combines a two-level go-kart track with Norwegian’s Freestyle Dining system, which does not use fixed seating.
