Entry-Level Cabins Can Cut Luxury Cruise Costs, Report Says

Booking the lowest available cabin category is the best way to reduce the price of a luxury cruise, according to a report comparing accommodations and included access aboard upscale ships. The report says passengers in entry-level rooms generally can use the same enhanced ship amenities as other guests.

Choosing a lower-category suite typically requires few trade-offs, the report found. The main benefits passengers may forgo are priority reservations for dining and shore excursions, rather than access to the broader onboard experience.

As an example, the report cited a seven-night Explora Journeys Mediterranean sailing on which a 377-square-foot Ocean Terrace Suite was priced at $4,985 per person. A penthouse measuring between 463 and 517 square feet cost $7,235 per person. Based on those fares, the lower-priced suite saved $4,500 for a couple.

The report noted that guests paying the lower fare could still visit the ship’s pan-Asian, French and Italian restaurants, have a drink at the Lobby Bar and use the spa.
