Cunard marks 10 millionth cruise passenger in Victoria
Queen Elizabeth’s arrival highlighted the anniversary of cruise ship visits to the British Columbia port.
Cunard Line celebrated its 10 millionth cruise passenger in Victoria, British Columbia, in August 2023. The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority welcomed the milestone passenger at The Breakwater District, Ogden Point, as Queen Elizabeth arrived.
The ship’s visit commemorated 54 years of cruise ships calling at Port Victoria. The inaugural cruise ship arrived in 1969, and the cruise industry has since experienced substantial growth.
Greater Victoria Harbour Authority CEO Robert Lewis-Manning said the passenger milestone was a notable achievement and that cruise tourism supports the local visitor economy and job creation. He said the sector generates more than $40 million in annual salaries.
According to the report, cruise visitors and crew spend a combined $56 million annually in the local economy, including on tours, transportation, retail and dining. It also said cruise lines invest $84 million in warehousing, ship agents, maintenance, port fees and docking services.
