Cruise upgrades span room service, specialty dining and suite enclaves
Options highlighted by a cruise writer and travel advisor range from modest dining extras to private excursions and luxury-style accommodations.

A cruise writer recommends several ways travelers can enhance a sailing, beginning with room-service breakfast. According to the report, many cruise lines, including some with budget-oriented fares, provide complimentary continental breakfast, while à la carte selections are generally available for an additional charge.
The writer also advises booking at least one specialty-restaurant meal, with additional reservations on longer voyages. Another suggested option is a spa day pass, which typically includes entry to a ship’s thermal suite. Amenities can include heated loungers, saunas, relaxation areas and multisensory wellness experiences.
For a larger upgrade, travel advisor Venuse Charles points to ship-within-a-ship accommodations. She says these offerings can combine access to the wider vessel with priority embarkation, private dining and more individualized service. Charles recommends MSC Yacht Club and Norwegian’s Haven to travelers seeking a luxury-style experience without choosing an entirely luxury-focused cruise line.
Suites aboard mainstream cruise lines may also feature expansive living areas, private hot tubs and personal butler service, according to the report. In port, the writer favors private excursions, citing her family’s river-rafting outing in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where a private driver adjusted the experience to their interests.
