Cruise roles offer varied pay ranges for South African applicants
A report outlines monthly earnings, contract conditions and key requirements for South Africans considering work at sea.

Cruise ship contracts generally run for four to nine months, according to the report. Because crew accommodation, meals and medical care are covered onboard, workers may be able to save a substantial share of their earnings.
Reported monthly pay ranges from about $900 to $1,500 for entry-level jobs such as utility cleaning, galley and housekeeping positions. Hospitality and service workers, including waiters, bartenders, cabin stewards and guest services staff, reportedly earn $1,500 to $3,500, with possible additional income from tips and service charges.
Technical and specialist crew, including sound and lighting technicians, betting dealers and IT personnel, can earn $2,000 to $5,000 or more per month, the report says. Senior roles such as executive chef, cruise director, chief engineer and staff captain may pay between $5,000 and $10,000 monthly.
The report states that South African crew may qualify for a full local income-tax exemption on foreign earnings if they spend at least 183 full days outside the country during a 12-month period, including at least 60 consecutive days.
Before beginning a contract, South African applicants need STCW 2010 Basic Safety Training and an ENG1 Medical Certificate from an accredited doctor, according to the report. Crew joining ships that call at United States ports also require a C1/D Seaman’s Visa.
