Cruise insurance guidance outlines cover for common disruptions

Passengers are advised to check how their policies address missed departures, medical confinement, delayed luggage and independently booked activities.

Cruise insurance guidance says itinerary-disruption cover can reimburse pre-booked excursion costs when a ship is unable to dock. If a qualifying delay outside a passenger’s control leads to a missed departure, missed-departure cover should pay for travel to the next port. This may include flights, overnight accommodation and transfers.

Cabin-confinement cover pays a daily benefit when a passenger is confined on medical grounds. A cruise policy may also cover certain expenses for a traveling companion who remains with a hospitalized passenger, subject to limits. These can include daily accommodation and meal costs for a defined period, plus alternative arrangements for both travelers to return home.

Delayed-baggage cover provides a specified amount for essentials, including clothing and toiletries, while luggage is missing. Passengers booking activities independently are advised to confirm that those activities appear on the policy’s activity schedule. Claims involving excluded activities, including injury, equipment damage or lost costs, may be refused. The guidance also says cancellation cover begins when the policy is purchased.
