Cruise expert outlines itinerary tips for first-time passengers

Lucy Southerton recommends limited sea days, established cruising regions and travel insurance for newcomers.

Virgin Cruises expert Lucy Southerton has advised first-time passengers to select an itinerary containing no more than two days at sea. She said those sea days should preferably not be consecutive.

For an initial voyage, Southerton recommended choosing the Mediterranean, Caribbean or Alaska. She said these established cruise regions offer destinations that are prepared to receive ship passengers, while local tour guides are familiar with serving cruise visitors. That experience, she suggested, can make the trip easier for newcomers.

Southerton also described travel insurance as essential when reserving a cruise. Her advice places insurance among the key considerations passengers should address during the booking process.

Other mistakes associated with first-time cruisers include taking too much luggage, overlooking the ship’s daily planner and not observing the applicable dress code. Prospective passengers are therefore encouraged to research the practical requirements of their sailing before departure.
