Cruise executives share practical advice for first-time passengers
Marella Cruises and Ambassador Cruise Line representatives offer tips on activities, connectivity, packing and cabin selection.

Scott Sanders, cruise director for Marella Cruises, TUI’s UK cruise line, has encouraged first-time passengers to explore activities beyond their usual interests while onboard. He also advised guests celebrating a birthday, anniversary or another milestone to inform the crew.
To become familiar with the vessel before departure, Sanders recommended watching an official ship tour or viewing videos posted by previous guests. While at sea, he said passengers should put mobile phones in airplane mode and connect through the ship’s Wi-Fi to help prevent unexpected roaming fees.
Bob McGowan, chief experience officer at Ambassador Cruise Line, advised travelers to retain key belongings in their hand luggage rather than placing everything in checked bags. Along with passports, wallets and personal items, he suggested carrying medication, toiletries, a toothbrush and a change of clothes because passengers may reach their cabins before the remainder of their luggage arrives.
For travelers who sometimes experience seasickness, McGowan said a cabin on a lower deck near the middle of the ship may provide a more stable position and could therefore be a suitable choice.
