Cruise calls bring visitors and business to Sydney waterfront

Three ships docked in Sydney, Nova Scotia, over two days as the city’s fall cruise season continued.

Three cruise ships visited Sydney over a two-day period, including Queen Mary on Thursday. The activity followed a record-tying day on October 2, 2024, when four cruise ships called at the Cape Breton port.

Visitor Karen Kowalczyk of Fort Myers, Florida, who toured Sydney with her husband Mike on Friday, said the downtown area could be cleaner and offered little to see. Some downtown buildings had peeling paint or graffiti, while a small number had been abandoned for years.

Andrew Morrow, co-owner of Breton Craft House, said cruise tourism supported the Craft House, Breton Brewing and the brewery’s accounts across Cape Breton Island.

Cape Breton’s fall cruise schedule was set to conclude November 3 with a return call by Seven Seas Splendour, one of the ships that had visited on Friday.
