CLIA counts 193 cruise ships equipped for shore power

Ship-side capability is growing, but compatible connections remain available at fewer than 3% of cruise ports, according to the association.

Cruise Lines International Association said 193 ships operated across its 45 member cruise lines are now equipped to connect to shore power. That total has more than tripled from 55 ships in 2018, according to a recent association report.

The report identified another 47 vessels scheduled for shore-power retrofits. It also said 39 newbuilds currently on order are expected to be delivered with the technology. Together, those additions would raise the number of shore-power-capable ships among CLIA’s current membership to 279 by 2039.

Port availability remains limited. CLIA reported that only 40 cruise ports worldwide currently provide at least one shore-power connection for cruise vessels. The association said those locations account for less than 3% of the ports visited by cruise ships.

CLIA characterized the figures as evidence of continued industry investment in preparing ships for shore power. However, it said achieving the technology’s full potential to reduce emissions will require additional investment in compatible port facilities and energy infrastructure.
