Carnival Conquest rescues sailor en route to Grenada
The cruise ship diverted after authorities relayed a distress call from a disabled sailboat, Carnival said.
Carnival Conquest changed course Wednesday while sailing toward Grenada after rescue authorities notified the ship of a distress call from a disabled sailboat, according to Carnival.
Crew members brought the sailboat’s sole occupant aboard the cruise ship. Carnival said the sailor was receiving care as Carnival Conquest resumed its voyage to St. George’s and remained on schedule.
The sailor’s identity and information about the sailboat were not released. The Coast Guard had not commented on the rescue. A passenger said the sailor repeatedly expressed gratitude that the cruise ship had found him.
MSC Musica and Silversea’s Silver Whisper were also reported to have responded to maritime emergencies earlier in the year, near Ibiza and off the Oregon coast, respectively. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, ships are required to assist people at sea who are in danger of being lost.
