The cruise line remembered the longtime captain for his professionalism, leadership and kind nature.

Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed the death of Captain Francesco La Farina, who served the company for 27 years. Carnival said he gained the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout its fleet through his professionalism, steady leadership and kindness.
La Farina died on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 26, after battling cancer, according to a Facebook post by his friend Jorge Solano. Solano said the captain was affectionately known as Ciccio and had fought the disease until the end.
According to La Farina's LinkedIn profile, he began working for Carnival in April 1999. A published account reported that he commanded several ships during his career, including Carnival Freedom and Carnival Magic.
The same account reported that La Farina was operating Carnival Magic when strong winds caused the ship to strike a pier in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The vessel briefly departed while some guests were still ashore. No passenger injuries were reported, and La Farina kept guests informed about the situation.
