British passenger medically evacuated from Celebrity Apex
A Spanish coastguard helicopter removed the 82-year-old passenger while the cruise ship was sailing in the Atlantic toward Portugal.
An 82-year-old British passenger was evacuated from Celebrity Apex by helicopter after a medical emergency was declared aboard the cruise ship on Thursday.
Celebrity Apex was traveling from Southampton, England, to Leixoes, near Porto in Portugal, when the emergency alert was issued. The vessel was reported to be in the Atlantic about 270 miles from land at the time.
Coastguard authorities in Galicia deployed the Helimer 402 helicopter to carry out the evacuation. The passenger was flown to La Coruna Airport, where he received a medical checkup, before being transferred to a hospital following the rescue.
The nature of the passenger’s health problem was not disclosed. No further information about his condition was provided.
