Britannia passenger weighs connectivity costs on Norwegian fjords cruise

A seven-day sailing highlighted the price of shipboard internet and restrictions on personal communications equipment.

A passenger who spent seven days cruising the Norwegian fjords aboard P&O Cruises’ Britannia said shipboard Wi-Fi or cellular service would have cost nearly $300 for one device over the course of the trip. Britannia is a 143,730-ton ship designed to carry 3,600 passengers.

Rather than purchase the onboard service, the passenger reported using Red Bull Mobile Data, paying about $30 for 1GB of data. The account presented the service as an alternative used during this particular voyage, without providing broader comparisons of coverage or performance.

The passenger also said travelers were told to carry passports during an unplanned call at Zeebrugge, Belgium, although the documents were not inspected. A passport cover was among the items the traveler was pleased to have brought.

P&O prohibits passengers from bringing satellite receivers and transmitters, including Starlink dishes, according to the traveler. The cruise line’s restrictions also cover routers and ham radios. The passenger noted that Britannia itself uses Starlink, while distinguishing the ship’s installed service from equipment guests are allowed to bring aboard.
