Around 140 passengers were reported missing after a cruise ship lost contact in waters near Indonesia while traveling across the Java Sea.
The report said the vessel had 240 people aboard during its journey from East Java to South Kalimantan on Borneo. At least 102 passengers were rescued, and the body of one passenger was located.
The Search and Rescue Office in Banjarmasin said it received a report that Virgo Transport 8 experienced a communication failure while sailing from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan.
Initial information indicated that the vessel’s last known position was in the Java Sea, some distance from a pier in Banjarmasin.
According to the report, the captain had notified authorities of rough seas and substantial waves before issuing a distress signal. Authorities later received information indicating that the vessel had overturned.
